About this role

We’re looking for a talented Spatial/Geospatial Scientist to drive innovation in drone-based data pipelines and analysis. You’ll collaborate with leading e-research partners, access world-class computing resources, and develop cutting-edge solutions in remote sensing and spatial data. Reporting to the Drone CRP Director enhances impact.

Work with the RCC to ensure data and metadata from multispectral, hyperspectral, and LiDAR sources are reliably parsed, indexed, stored, and extracted. Automate data ingestion, processing, and delivery workflows including versioning and quality control protocols. Ensure all data assets are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) with ISO 19115 metadata.

Develop analytical tools and machine learning for object detection, change detection, classification, and spectral indices like NDVI and NDRE. Collaborate closely with the Centre Director, drone pilots, and researchers to deliver tailored solutions. Prepare technical documentation, reports, presentations, and provide field campaign support with travel.

This research-focused platform academic position offers leadership in knowledge transfer, partnerships, and commercialisation. Supervise HDR students, build teams, and engage in major funding applications. Demonstrate responsible research conduct and develop supervisee capabilities for broader impact.

Requirements

  • Experience processing remote sensing data types including multispectral, hyperspectral, and LiDAR
  • Proficiency in machine learning for geospatial tasks like object detection, change detection, and classification
  • Knowledge of spectral indices such as NDVI and NDRE for remote sensing analysis
  • Expertise in automating data pipelines with versioning, quality control, and FAIR principles
  • Familiarity with metadata standards like ISO 19115 for geospatial data management
  • Ability to develop analytical tools and routines for extracting insights from spatial data
  • Background in drone-based data workflows and remote sensing applications

Responsibilities

  • Work with the RCC to ensure data and metadata can be reliably and automatically parsed, indexed, stored and extracted for multispectral, hyperspectral, and LiDAR data
  • Automate data ingestion, processing, and delivery workflows with data versioning and quality control protocols
  • Ensure all data assets are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) following ISO 19115 metadata schema
  • Develop analytical tools and machine learning techniques for object detection, change detection, classification, and spectral indices like NDVI and NDRE
  • Advise and collaborate with researchers and external partners on effective analytical methods
  • Work closely with the Centre Director, drone pilots, and researchers to understand data requirements and deliver solutions
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations on findings and methodologies
  • Provide support during field campaigns and travel to conferences and stakeholder meetings

Benefits

  • 17% superannuation
  • Access to world-class computing resources
  • Opportunities for research leadership and HDR supervision
  • Involvement in major funding applications and partnerships
  • Collaboration with leading e-research partners
