About this role

OceanaGold is a mid-tier gold and copper producer with four operating mines globally, including the Waihi underground gold mine in New Zealand's North Island. The recent consent for the Waihi North Project extends mine life long-term, providing assurance of sustained operations.

This role ensures day-to-day mine geology resources are optimised through daily underground inspections, quality data capture, and excellent communication with stakeholders. Grade control activities include lithological and structural mapping, sampling, and ore/waste delineation for development and stoping activities.

The geologist completes stope reconciliation reports and provides accurate geological data including sampling, assay, logging, orientation, and mapping to enable generation of geological models and reports. Supervision of underground technicians and sampling operations is a key responsibility.

Collaboration with engineering and production personnel ensures grade control and geology functions align with Mining Department goals. Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification – minimum B.Sc. Geology
  • Full and current driver licence, ability to drive manual vehicles
  • Minimum 1 year post-graduate experience preferred
  • Sound technical skills in Geology
  • Mapping and interpretation skills
  • Sampling theory knowledge
  • Strong PC skills and computer literacy

Responsibilities

  • Conduct grade control activities underground including lithological and structural mapping, sampling, and ore/waste delineation of development and stoping activities
  • Complete stope reconciliation reports
  • Provide accurate and complete geological data including sampling, assay, logging, orientation, and mapping for geological models, presentations, and reports
  • Enter geological data including dispatches, assay results, and validate QA/QC data
  • Supervise underground technicians and sampling operations, including sample preparation
  • Undertake logging of grade control drill core in a timely and accurate manner
  • Liaise with engineering and production personnel to ensure grade control and geology functions align with Mining Department goals
  • Schedule and communicate weekly/monthly planning to relevant contractors and business partners
