About this role

The National Land Cover and GIS Specialist supports FAO land monitoring initiatives in Ghana through national-scale mapping and spatial analysis. The role focuses on land cover classification and geographic data management for agricultural and environmental projects.

Daily work involves processing satellite imagery, updating national land cover databases, and generating GIS outputs for project reporting. Specialists coordinate with field teams to validate mapping results and maintain data accuracy across multiple regions.

The position operates within the FRGHA unit as NPP personnel, collaborating with government counterparts and technical staff on TCP/SFW/4008 activities. Work centers on Accra with occasional travel for data collection and stakeholder meetings.

Contract duration reaches up to 12 months with extension potential based on project needs. The role contributes directly to Ghana's land monitoring capacity and FAO's regional geospatial objectives.

Requirements

Proficiency in GIS software including ArcGIS and QGIS for land cover mapping
Experience processing satellite imagery and remote sensing data for classification
Knowledge of land cover classification systems and national mapping standards
Ability to manage geospatial databases and produce cartographic outputs
Familiarity with field validation techniques for land cover data accuracy

Responsibilities

Process satellite imagery to produce national land cover maps and change detection products
Maintain and update GIS databases for land monitoring under TCP/SFW/4008
Validate land cover classifications through field data collection and ground truthing
Generate spatial analysis outputs and maps to support project reporting requirements
Coordinate with national partners on data standards and land cover classification systems
Develop technical documentation for GIS workflows and land cover mapping methods
