About this role

AECOM is seeking a Principal GIS Specialist to serve as a hands-on technical lead responsible for architecting and delivering advanced GIS solutions. The role guides standards and automation while coordinating delivery across teams with emphasis on technical depth and delivery excellence.

Daily work centers on designing spatial data models, analytics pipelines, and application patterns using ArcGIS Enterprise and Online. The specialist drives automation with Python, ArcPy, and FME while stewarding geodatabases and applying advanced analytics for site selection and digital twin use cases.

Based in Bucharest with a hybrid schedule, the position integrates GIS with engineering and environmental workflows including CAD/BIM and SQL databases. Collaboration with project managers and discipline leads aligns geospatial scope and resources to broader program objectives.

The role supports client consulting and measurable business growth through technical engagement and long-term relationship building. Opportunities exist to increase market visibility via workshops, technical publications, and presentations focused on UK environmental programs.

Requirements

  • Experience architecting and delivering advanced GIS solutions as a technical lead.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Enterprise/Online, Experience Builder, Survey123, and Field Maps.
  • Strong skills in Python/ArcPy, FME, ModelBuilder, and geodatabase management.
  • Experience integrating GIS with CAD/BIM, SQL databases, and digital data capture workflows.
  • Strong preference for experience supporting UK-based environmental programs including linear infrastructure, offshore/onshore wind, solar, and Environmental Impact Assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement robust spatial data models, analytics pipelines, and application patterns using ArcGIS Enterprise/Online and Experience Builder.
  • Drive automation and quality using Python/ArcPy, FME, ModelBuilder, and reproducible workflows.
  • Steward enterprise and file geodatabases including schema, standards, metadata, versioning, and security.
  • Apply advanced analytics such as multi-criteria decision analysis for site selection and support digital twin use cases.
  • Integrate GIS with engineering and environmental workflows, CAD/BIM, databases, APIs, and digital data capture.
  • Govern consistent workflows, documentation, metadata, and QA/QC including adherence to Technical Quality Review processes.
  • Serve as the technical point of contact on assigned projects and shape solutions, scopes, and cost estimates.
  • Build and grow long-term client relationships with emphasis on Environment sector needs and value.
