About this role
AFRY is one of the largest international power sector consulting and engineering companies with 19,000 experts creating sustainable solutions worldwide. In South East Asia, it leads with offices in Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Hanoi, Singapore, Pune, Noida, and Taipei. The Senior Site/Field Geologist provides advanced geological and geotechnical expertise for dam and hydropower projects.
The role focuses on dam foundations and underground works from pre-feasibility to construction, designing and supervising site investigations including geological mapping. Develop geological/geotechnical ground models evaluating rock material parameters, rock mass parameters, hydrogeological models, and construction materials. Ensure good design, stability, and constructability of dams and underground structures.
Works closely with design engineers, geotechnical specialists, and construction teams to identify, assess, and communicate geological hazards throughout the project lifecycle. Coordinates with civil, geotechnical, structural engineers, contractors, drilling teams, and investigation consultants. Spends time in the office assisting with preparation of design reports.
Supports foundation treatment and ground improvement works including grouting and seepage control. Prepares geological and geotechnical sections of feasibility studies, Geological Data Reports, Geological Interpretative Reports, and Geotechnical Baseline Reports. Ensures compliance with HSE requirements, site safety regulations, local legislation, and international standards amid increasing business growth.
Requirements
- Advanced expertise in geological mapping, borehole logging, and core assessment for dam foundations
- Proficiency in rock mass classification, rock material parameters, and rock mass parameters evaluation
- Experience developing hydrogeological models and sourcing construction materials
- Knowledge of geological hazards assessment for underground works like tunnels and caverns
- Skills in construction-stage geological mapping, documentation, and ground condition verification
- Familiarity with foundation treatment techniques including grouting and seepage control
- Ability to interpret geological data for design assumptions and constructability
- Understanding of international standards for geological activities in hydropower projects
Responsibilities
- Plan, supervise, and interpret geological and geotechnical investigations including surface mapping, borehole logging, core assessment, rock mass classification, groundwater evaluation, and identification of geological hazards relevant to dam foundations and underground works
- Provide geological input to the design of dams, tunnels, underground caverns, and powerhouses, including foundation assessment, rock mass characterization, fault and discontinuity analysis, seepage conditions, and ground behavior
- Deliver on-site geological support during excavation, tunnelling, and foundation preparation, verifying actual ground conditions against design expectations and recommending adaptations
- Support and supervise foundation treatment and ground improvement works, including grouting, consolidation, curtain grouting, and seepage control measures for dam foundations and underground structures
- Prepare and review geological and geotechnical sections of feasibility studies, Geological Data Reports (GDR), Geological Interpretative Reports (GIR), Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBR), and construction-stage reports
- Coordinate closely with civil, geotechnical, and structural engineers, and liaise with contractors, drilling teams, and investigation consultants
- Communicate geological findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to project stakeholders
- Ensure all geological activities comply with HSE requirements, site safety regulations, local legislation, and applicable international standards
Benefits
- Join multinational staff of more than 500 working in power generation field in Asia
- Regional consultancy and engineering assignments from South East Asia offices
- Contribute to sustainable solutions for future generations in growing business
- Work on dam and hydropower projects from pre-feasibility through construction
