About this role

The successful candidate will join a team of geophysicists responsible for the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) seismic network at the University of Oklahoma’s Norman campus. This Geophysicist III position is a non-tenured/non-tenure-track faculty scientist role. The scientist will conduct research in earth and energy geosciences and applied geophysics.

Work with OGS and Mewbourne College staff, faculty, students, and external collaborators. Interface with industry, state regulators, and the general public. Share responsibilities with a small high-performing team of field technicians, network operators, and data analysts running the upgraded network of 130 seismic stations including DAS.

The OGS seismic network has undergone a state-funded upgrade bringing in new techniques. The position adds to this group focused on growth into areas such as AI. Build staff resilience and increase the visibility and reputation of the network.

Focus on external funding and publication strategies. Present findings at scientific conferences, public forums, regulators, and policymakers. Write reports and peer-reviewed articles while playing a key role in broader OGS, Mewbourne College, and University of Oklahoma missions.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. holding scientist
  • Preferentially some experience in academia, industry, or national laboratory
  • Located in Norman, Oklahoma
  • Some travel including domestic meetings, occasional international, and site visits
  • Reasonable physical ability to carry large objects and walk moderate distances in varying conditions
  • Reasonable proficiency with computational tools
  • Proficiency with geophysical methods
  • Upkeep of electronic instruments such as seismometers and DAS stations
