About this role

The Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) protects, conserves, and enhances Arizona's water supplies through bold, thoughtful, and innovative water management. ADWR seeks a talented, motivated Hydrogeologist 3 to join the Adjudications team and support the Arizona General Stream Adjudication Courts per Arizona Revised Statutes 45-256(A).

This position leads projects related to the Gila and Little Colorado River Adjudications, Indian water settlements, water claims, and investigations. Responsibilities include analyzing water resource information, imagery, and GIS data collection and analysis. Coordinate closely with Adjudications staff and other agency personnel as directed by the Division Supervisor.

Daily work involves field data collection, water rights and landownership research, map production, and summarizing information in technical reports. May serve as an expert witness in contested cases, prepare for depositions, and testify in court. Provide technical support associated with the Adjudications Division.

Hybrid work available within Arizona based on business needs and performance measures, requiring a minimum of two days on-site weekly at the Phoenix office. The State of Arizona fosters a work culture of flexibility, autonomy, and trust across agencies.

Engage in complex, multi-disciplinary field investigative projects of a sensitive and visible nature, researching and planning water resources data collection.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the complex and technical aspects of the Adjudication program
  • Proficiency in GIS data collection and analysis
  • Experience analyzing water resource information and imagery
  • Ability to conduct water rights and landownership research
  • Expertise in serving as an expert witness in water adjudication cases
  • Familiarity with Gila River and Little Colorado River Adjudications processes
  • Skills in field investigations of groundwater and surface water resources

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects related to the Gila and Little Colorado River Adjudications, Indian water rights settlements, water claims, and investigations
  • Conduct field data collection, analyze water resource information and imagery, produce maps, perform water rights and landownership research, and summarize in technical reports
  • Participate in complex field investigative projects requiring multi-disciplinary expertise, including researching and planning water resources data collection
  • Serve as an expert witness for contested cases within the Adjudications, prepare for legal depositions and trial testimony
  • Provide accurate and efficient customer service to all public and private sector entities
  • Coordinate with Adjudications staff and agency personnel in other sections to complete work directed by the Division Supervisor
