About this role
As an Exploration Geologist at Kinross Gold Corporation, you will coordinate staff and contractor activities in exploration program design, execution, and reporting at the Fort Knox Mine, located approximately 26 miles from Fairbanks. This role balances contractor supervision and project management duties with hands-on geologic work across mine site, brownfield, and greenfield settings.
Your day-to-day work involves field geology and logistics in a variety of scenarios, from town-based to tent-based operations, with travel by highway, UTV, helicopter, and on foot. You will integrate and interpret geologic mapping, geophysical, geochemical, trenching, and drilling data, and assist in constructing 3D geologic models and compiling mineral resources.
You will be part of a team that contributes to all department programs, with opportunities to mentor junior staff and contracting staff during daily functions, developing your leadership skills. The position requires frequent travel to other offices, facilities, or field sites, particularly from May through October.
Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world, having produced over 8.5 million ounces since 1996. The mine prioritizes being a strong contributor to the State and local communities, having contributed more than US$25 million to the Alaska Mental Health Trust since 2001.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or equivalent required; a Master of Science degree with economic geology emphasis is preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a mine or exploration geologist
- Knowledge of exploration techniques as they apply to mineral deposit settings
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by a state agency, or ability to pass a driver competency course and exam
- Ability to work without risk or harm to self and others
- Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance
- Compliance with all company policies and procedures including safety, environmental, confidentiality, and code of conduct
Responsibilities
- Participate in technical and logistical project activities in the field and office
- Advise on or carry out technical functions including mapping, drill hole logging, and project planning
- Integrate and interpret geologic mapping, geophysical, geochemical, trenching, and drilling data
- Assist in constructing 3D Geologic Models and compiling and calculating mineral resources
- Oversee and enforce rigorous QA/QC standards for all aspects of technical projects
- Assist in authoring routine and statutory technical reports
- Assist in preparing budget requests, scoping contracts, and managing contractors for exploration and project development
- Help develop other department personnel to perform exploration duties
