About this role

This Geologist III supports environmental investigation and remediation projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The position focuses on providing technical expertise in site characterization, environmental restoration, and regulatory compliance. Fieldwork is central to the role, with duties including identifying soils and coordinating drilling activities.

Day-to-day duties involve evaluating geological conditions in situ and collecting soil, air, and water samples. The geologist oversees drilling operations using Direct Push Technology, Hollow Stem Auger, and Roto-Sonic rigs, and utilizes Hand Auger and Little Beaver for subsurface sampling.

The geologist works with technical advisors to assure quality of field data and written deliverables. They also assist in developing junior staff and contribute to project planning for delineating chemicals of concern in soil, sediment, and groundwater. Office duties include data management and documentation organization.

This role offers the opportunity to author scientific reports for regulatory review and approval. The geologist will evaluate historical data and geological conditions to determine risk and nature/extent of contamination. Contributing to complex environmental projects at a national lab provides professional growth.
