About this role

OceanaGold is a growing mid-tier gold and copper producer with four operating mines globally, including the Waihi underground gold mine in New Zealand's North Island. The recent consent for the Waihi North Project has extended mine life, providing long-term assurance for the local community.

As a Geologist within the Exploration and Geology team, you will undertake both regional geological field work and core logging. Your day-to-day work involves geological outcrop mapping, soil sampling, geophysics, and the timely and accurate logging of exploration and grade control drill core.

You will supervise core shed and regional field technicians during sampling, monitor correct protocols, and analyse assay quality control data. You'll support the execution of regional and near-mine drill programs, including drill hole planning and monitoring, while ensuring all geological data is entered and validated per QA/QC practices.

This residential role offers the opportunity to live and work in Waihi, the gateway to the stunning Coromandel region, with a 9-on, 5-off roster. Requirements

  • Tertiary Qualification – minimum B.Sc. Geology or Earth Science
  • Full and current driver licence with ability to drive manual vehicles
  • Minimum 1 year post-graduate experience preferred
  • Sound technical skills in Geology
  • Knowledge of Sampling Theory
  • Strong computer skills and computer literacy

Responsibilities

  • Assist with regional field programmes including geological outcrop mapping, soil sampling, and geophysics
  • Undertake logging of exploration and grade control drill core in a timely and accurate manner
  • Supervise core shed and regional field technicians during the sampling process, including sample preparation and monitoring of correct sampling protocols
  • Analyse and report assay quality control data and sample turnaround time
  • Provide accurate and complete geological data including core logging, assay, outcrop mapping, geophysics, soil sampling, and terraspec analysis to enable generation of geological models, presentations and reports
  • Support the execution of regional and near-mine drill programs, including drill hole planning and monitoring
  • Perform data entry and validation of all geological information in line with the company's QA/QC practices
  • Participate in development of personal training strategies and undertake appropriate training modules
