About this role

The Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) protects, conserves, and enhances Arizona's water supplies through bold, thoughtful, and innovative water management. ADWR seeks a talented, motivated Hydrogeologist 2 to join the Adjudications team. This role provides support to the Arizona General Stream Adjudication Courts and Master(s) as described in Arizona Revised Statutes 45-256(A).

This position works closely with adjudications staff and agency personnel to complete work directed by the Division's Assistant Director. Daily tasks include field data collection, analyzing water resource information and imagery, map production, historic water rights and landownership research, and summarizing information in reports. It also involves customer service requests, file management, and administration support.

The role participates in complex field investigative projects requiring multi-disciplinary expertise, including researching and planning sensitive water resources data collection. Provides accurate customer service to public and private entities. Serves as expert witness for contested cases, preparing for depositions and trial testimony.

This position offers hybrid remote work within Arizona based on business needs and performance measures, requiring a minimum of two days on-site weekly at the Phoenix office. The State of Arizona promotes a work culture of flexibility, autonomy, and trust via the Remote Work Program.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of hydrogeology and water resource analysis techniques
  • Skills in map production and interpreting aerial imagery and remotely sensed data
  • Experience with historic water rights and landownership research
  • Ability to compile and interpret data from diverse sources including databases and historical records
  • Familiarity with Arizona water adjudication processes and statutes
  • Proficiency in summarizing complex water resource information in reports

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to the Adjudications Division including field data collection, analyzing water resource information and imagery, map production, water rights and landownership research, and summarizing information in technical reports
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret water resource data from databases, published reports, web searches, calculations, historical records, maps, aerial imagery, and remotely sensed data
  • Participate in complex and/or field investigative projects requiring multi-disciplinary expertise, including researching and planning water resources data collection
  • Provide accurate and efficient customer service to public and private sector entities
  • Serve as expert witness for specific contested cases within the adjudications, preparing for legal depositions and trial testimony
  • Assist with customer service requests, file management, and administration support as required
