About this role

The Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources seeks an OPS Underwater Geophysicist in Archaeological Research. This open competitive temporary role involves processing geophysical datasets for submerged cultural resources. Focus areas include historic and paleo landform targets in Florida waters.

Daily duties center on identifying targets of interest from datasets and creating categorized lists by defining characteristics. Cross-reference the Florida Master Site File database and update records accordingly. Manage and archive large geophysical datasets while ensuring timely deliverables for grant projects.

Work closely with the grant manager in a collaborative environment dedicated to archaeological research. Utilize GIS systems, ESRI, and specialized software like SonarWiz, Hypack, or QPS. Knowledge of Florida’s submerged pre-contact and historic sites supports survey efforts.

Position requires experience in marine geophysics or related fields, with preferences for scientific diving certification. Contribute to cultural resource surveys under state oversight. Opportunity to apply expertise in a state agency focused on historical preservation.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of direct work experience in Anthropology, Archaeology, Marine Geology, Geophysics, Oceanography, or closely related field
  • Experience with GIS systems
  • Experience processing archaeological geophysical datasets
  • Experience conducting submerged cultural resource surveys
  • Experience with underwater geophysical survey software (SonarWiz, Hypack, or QPS)
  • Knowledge of the types and distribution of Florida’s submerged pre-contact and historic period archaeological sites
  • Experience using ESRI
  • Ability to manage databases
