We are seeking a dynamic and experienced GIS Specialist to join our growing team.
The Office of Coast Survey manages NOAA nautical charting and data collection programs to promote safe navigation. The External Source Data Team within Hydrographic Surveys Division vets, manages, and cleans data from diverse providers. This data feeds into the National Bathymetric Source Program for nautical chart modernization.
Support ESD to process external source data, ensuring quality, usability, and efficient integration of bathymetry into OCS navigation products. Review bathymetry data and metadata for suitability in product updates. Investigate submissions from federal agencies, universities, ports, and others to verify data validity based on quality attributes.
Process data to OCS standard formats for ingestion into the National Bathymetric Source. Participate in research and development of improved data review and management workflows. Engage in special projects to augment NOAA's hydrographic survey efforts.
Requirements
- 5-7 years in GIS, Computer Mapping, and/or Charting fields and 2-4 years in Hydrography
- Data analysis and GIS
- Software development including Python, Integrated Development Environments, debugging principles, continuous integration testing and automated documentation
- Databases and queries in PostgreSQL
- Geospatial applications such as QGIS, libraries such as Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL), and OGC web services
- Horizontal and vertical datums as well as transformations in the context of point and raster data
- Version control best practices and experience with version control software such as Git
- Expertise in data management, relational databases, database development
Responsibilities
- Review bathymetry data and metadata to assess suitability for Office of Coast Survey navigation product updates
- Investigate submissions from external source data providers to verify validity of data packages and inform appropriate use based on hydrographic data quality attributes
- Process submitted data to OCS standard formats and prepare data for ingestion into the National Bathymetric Source
- Participate in the research and development of improved data review and data management workflows
- Support vetting, managing, and cleaning of external source data for NOAA hydrographic surveys
