This Professional Geologist I position holds high responsibility in protecting human health and the environment via assessment and remediation of petroleum-contaminated sites. It delivers technical oversight, project management, and professional geologic certification for state-funded cleanup projects under Section 376, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 62-780, Florida Administrative Code.

The role requires extensive knowledge of petroleum contamination assessment, remediation, and preapproved cleanup procedures in the BPSS SOP Manual. Responsibilities include evaluating technical work products, associated costs, and providing certification under Chapter 492, Florida Statutes, for PRP Team 1 activities.

Work involves collaborating with Agency Term Contractors, Division of Waste Management staff, and contracted cleanup counties. Site managers conduct on-site inspections, negotiate scopes of work, and ensure cost-effective, timely cleanups through regular reviews and guidance.

Opportunities include developing guidance documents, implementing corrective procedures, and creating a continuing training program for PRP geology staff. The position supports responses to assistance requests and technical document reviews as needed.

Requirements

  • Florida Professional Geologist license required for technical oversight and certification under Chapter 492, Florida Statutes
  • Extensive knowledge of petroleum contamination assessment and remediation
  • Knowledge of administrative procedures for preapproved cleanup per BPSS SOP Manual
  • Ability to evaluate technical work products and associated costs
  • Familiarity with Section 376, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 62-780, Florida Administrative Code
  • Experience in project management for petroleum cleanup sites
  • Skills in on-site inspections and monitoring environmental rehabilitation

Responsibilities

  • Oversee contamination assessment and remedial action activities for state-funded rehabilitation projects as a Site Manager
  • Make recommendations for corrective actions, negotiate changes in scope of work, prepare change orders, and approve contractor invoices
  • Provide geology guidance, review, oversight, and project management of work performed by Agency Term Contractors
  • Review geology work products and petroleum cleanup work for consistency with protocols and procedures
  • Respond to requests for assistance from Agency Term Contractors, Division of Waste Management staff, and leadership
  • Provide geology document review support to contracted cleanup counties and perform technical reviews of PRP documents
  • Develop and implement a continuing training program for geology in the PRP
