About this role

We are seeking an Associate Director Hydrogeologist to play a key role in growing and leading our Ground & Water business, with a strong focus on business development, client leadership, and team growth alongside technical and project delivery. This is an exciting opportunity to work with our industry-leading Hydrogeology team and help develop and maintain the UK industry standard software ConSim and LandSim.

As an Associate Director, you will operate as a senior leader within the Ground & Water team, responsible for driving business growth, strengthening client relationships, and ensuring successful delivery of complex, multi-disciplinary projects. Your day-to-day work will involve leading the identification and conversion of new business opportunities, acting as Project Director on key assignments, and providing strategic advice to clients on complex environmental and remediation challenges.

You will lead, mentor, and develop teams within the Newcastle office and wider region, building high-performing, collaborative teams and fostering a positive working culture. This role offers the chance to drive sector growth across contaminated land and remediation, energy transition and industrial decommissioning, and infrastructure and regeneration.

You will contribute to regional and national business development plans and growth targets, while expanding WSP's market presence and strengthening its reputation within the Ground & Water sector. Requirements

  • Extensive experience in hydrogeology and groundwater management, with a strong technical background.
  • Proven track record in business development and client relationship management within the geosciences sector.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams on complex, high-value projects.
  • Strong commercial acumen and financial management skills, including budget oversight and margin management.
  • Chartered status or equivalent professional accreditation (e.g., CGeol, CWEM).
  • Expertise in contaminated land assessment and remediation, energy transition, or industrial decommissioning.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard software such as ConSim and LandSim.
  • Ability to provide technical direction and assurance, maintaining high standards of quality and governance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the identification, pursuit and conversion of new business opportunities across the UK market.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key clients, acting as a senior point of contact.
  • Act as Project Director on key projects, with accountability for delivery to time, cost and quality.
  • Provide strategic advice to clients across complex environmental and remediation challenges.
  • Lead, mentor and develop teams within the Newcastle office and wider region, supporting recruitment and capability development.
  • Drive sector growth across contaminated land and remediation, energy transition and industrial decommissioning, and infrastructure and regeneration.
  • Take accountability for project and regional financial performance, including revenue generation and profitability through effective margin management.
  • Contribute to regional and national business development plans and growth targets, expanding WSP's market presence.
