About this role
AECOM is seeking a Principal GIS Specialist, a hands-on technical lead responsible for architecting and delivering advanced GIS solutions. This role guides standards and automation while coordinating delivery across teams. Emphasis is on technical depth, delivery excellence, consultative client engagement, team mentorship, and business growth.
Design and implement robust spatial data models, analytics pipelines, and application patterns using ArcGIS Enterprise/Online, Experience Builder, dashboards, Survey123, and Field Maps. Drive automation and quality with Python/ArcPy, FME, ModelBuilder, and reproducible workflows. Steward enterprise geodatabases including schema, standards, metadata, versioning, and security.
Integrate GIS with engineering, environmental workflows, CAD/BIM, SQL databases, APIs, and digital data capture. Collaborate with project managers and discipline leads to align GIS scope, resources, and deliverables to program objectives. Act as GIS/Data Lead on larger, complex programs while governing workflows, QA/QC, and risk management.
Serve as technical point of contact, shaping solutions, scopes, cost estimates, and pursuit materials. Build and grow long-term client relationships in the Environment sector. Support geospatial business growth through client workshops, technical publications, and presentations.
Requirements
- Experience supporting UK-based environmental programs such as linear infrastructure, offshore/onshore wind, solar, carbon capture & storage, master planning, permitting, and Environmental Impact Assessments
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Enterprise/Online, Experience Builder/Web Experience, Survey123, and Field Maps
- Expertise in Python/ArcPy, FME, ModelBuilder, Arcade, and automation for reproducible workflows
- Knowledge of enterprise/file geodatabases including schema design, standards, metadata, versioning, and security
- Skills in advanced analytics like multi-criteria decision analysis and emerging digital twin applications
- Ability to integrate GIS with CAD/BIM, SQL databases, APIs, and digital data capture technologies
Responsibilities

- Apply advanced analytics such as multi-criteria decision analysis for site selection and support digital twin use cases
- Integrate GIS with engineering and environmental workflows, CAD/BIM, databases, APIs, and digital data capture
- Align GIS scope, interfaces, resources, and deliverables with project managers and discipline leads; act as GIS/Data Lead
- Govern consistent workflows, documentation, metadata, QA/QC, and adherence to Technical Quality Review processes
- Serve as technical point of contact, shape solutions and scopes, contribute to method statements and pursuits
