About this role
AECOM is seeking a Principal GIS Specialist, a hands-on technical lead responsible for architecting and delivering advanced GIS solutions. This role guides standards and automation while coordinating delivery across teams, with emphasis on technical depth and delivery excellence. Proportionate responsibilities include consultative client engagement, team mentorship, and business growth.
Design and implement robust spatial data models, analytics pipelines, and application patterns using ArcGIS Enterprise/Online, Experience Builder, dashboards, Survey123, and Field Maps. Drive automation with Python/ArcPy, FME, ModelBuilder, and reproducible workflows. Steward enterprise geodatabases for schema, standards, metadata, versioning, and security.
Integrate GIS with engineering, environmental workflows, CAD/BIM, databases, APIs, and digital data capture. Work with project managers and discipline leads to align GIS scope and deliverables to program objectives, acting as GIS/Data Lead on complex programs. Govern workflows, documentation, QA/QC, and support planning, budgeting, resourcing.
Serve as technical point of contact, shaping solutions, scopes, and estimates for clients, especially in UK-based environmental programs like linear infrastructure, wind, solar, and EIAs. Build long-term client relationships in the Environment sector. Support geospatial business growth through workshops, publications, and presentations.

Requirements
- Experience architecting and delivering advanced GIS solutions with technical depth
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Enterprise/Online, Experience Builder, Survey123, Field Maps
- Expertise in Python/ArcPy, FME, ModelBuilder, Arcade for automation and workflows
- Knowledge of enterprise geodatabases, spatial data models, analytics pipelines
- Skills in integrating GIS with CAD/BIM, SQL databases, APIs
- Strong preference for supporting UK-based environmental programs (linear infrastructure, offshore/onshore wind, solar, CCS, master planning, permitting, EIAs)
- Ability to act as GIS/Data Lead on larger or complex programs
- Experience in advanced analytics like multi-criteria decision analysis and digital twins
Responsibilities

- Integrate GIS with engineering/environmental workflows, CAD/BIM, databases (SQL), APIs, and digital data capture
- Align GIS scope, interfaces, resources, and deliverables with project managers and discipline leads on complex programs
- Govern consistent workflows, documentation, metadata, QA/QC, and adherence to Technical Quality Review processes
- Serve as technical point of contact, shape solutions/scopes/estimates, and contribute to client pursuits
