About this role
The Specialist Resource Estimation Geologist executes and oversees resource modelling using validated borehole data, aligning with operational and project planning timelines. This role is critical to producing high-quality geological models that inform strategic mine planning at Kumba Iron Ore, a leading producer of high-grade iron ore.
Day-to-day, the geologist establishes and maintains a comprehensive borehole database, generates representative solids models, and develops detailed long-term block models. They also rigorously check and validate exploration data, providing systematic feedback to ensure data quality and reliability.
The role collaborates closely with Exploration and Production Geologists to understand local geology and ore genesis, and maintains robust interactions with Metallurgy and long-term mine planning teams. This ensures that geological models communicate effectively across disciplines and support dynamic ore body modelling.
By adhering to Kumba and Anglo-American reporting standards and the SAMREC Code, the geologist contributes to annual Mineral Resource Reports that accurately represent the company's resources. This position offers the chance to enhance modelling processes and drive continuous improvement in geological data integrity and accessibility.
Requirements
- Comprehensive understanding of local geology, ore genesis, and tectonostratigraphic relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and update 3D solids models that are compliant with exploration data and free of gaps or overlaps.
- Experience in compiling Mineral Resource Reports per the SAMREC Code and Anglo-American Resource and Reserve reporting standards.
- Proficiency in borehole data validation and database management.
- Strong analytical skills for conducting in-depth analyses of geological data to refine block models.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Exploration, Production Geologists, Metallurgy, and mine planning teams.
- Knowledge of resource estimation methodologies and dynamic ore body modelling tools (e.g., RMSP).
- Attention to detail and commitment to data integrity, accuracy, and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Adhere to all safety, health and environmental practices and requirements.
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive and validated borehole database.
- Generate representative geological solids models and develop detailed long-term geological block models to inform strategic mine planning.
- Compile and prepare comprehensive Mineral Resource Reports annually in compliance with Kumba and Anglo-American standards and the SAMREC Code.
- Rigorously check and validate data received from the exploration team and establish a systematic feedback loop for continuous improvement.
- Develop and update three-dimensional solids models based on the latest validated exploration data, ensuring 100% compliance and spatial accuracy.
- Enhance modelling processes to enable dynamic ore body modelling through representative solutions (e.g., RMSP).
- Maintain ongoing and robust interactions with Metallurgy and long-term mine planning teams to communicate geological model changes.
