About this role
The Alberta Geological Survey, a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator, seeks a Quaternary Geologist for the Groundwater Geoscience Team. This position involves producing near-surface stratigraphic models for the Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation project to identify favorable groundwater locations. The work supports regulatory decisions and sustainable groundwater management across southern Alberta.
Daily responsibilities center on applying geological principles to map Neogene-Quaternary stratigraphy and build 3D models using Seequent Leapfrog Works. Models cover roughly 5000 km2 and delineate coarse-grained geobodies that may serve as aquifers. Field observations, core, water well records, and geophysical data inform the subsurface interpretations.
The Groundwater Geoscience Team collaborates with hydrogeologists to integrate geological surfaces into conceptual and numerical groundwater models. Results are shared through maps, reports, and web-hosted applications for decision-makers, licence holders, and municipalities. Interaction with university peers and provincial departments supports ongoing scientific credibility.
This limited-term role contributes directly to improved access to groundwater data and more resilient resource planning. Field programs for drilling and outcrop logging provide hands-on stratigraphic insight while advancing the SAGE project objectives.
Requirements
- Post-graduate degree in Geology or geoscience-related discipline.
- 5-7 years of relevant geoscience experience in industry, academia, or government.
- Experience building high-resolution geological models in sediments above bedrock using Quaternary stratigraphic units.
- Experience with geophysical log interpretation related to Quaternary sediments and underlying bedrock units.
Responsibilities
- Apply geological principles and independent judgement to map the Neogene-Quaternary stratigraphy of southern Alberta for groundwater evaluation.
- Build 3D Neogene-Quaternary geological models across approximately 5000 km2 using Seequent Leapfrog Works to delineate probable aquifer geobodies.
- Identify and model the subsurface distribution of Quaternary stratigraphic units and the bedrock unconformity using core, well records, and geophysical data.
- Disseminate findings through geological maps and reports that maintain the scientific credibility of the AGS and AER.
- Collaborate with hydrogeologists to incorporate geological data, surfaces, and models into conceptual and numerical groundwater models.
- Organize and assist in field work programs including water well drilling and geological outcrop section logging.
- Interact with peers in universities and provincial government departments to support project objectives.
Benefits
- Hybrid work arrangement
- Limited term position with anticipated 12-month duration
- Compensation range of $102,000 - $120,000 per year based on qualifications and internal equity
