About this role

The City of Aurora is seeking a GIS Specialist to support Aurora Water staff by creating and maintaining web applications, reports, and other GIS-based solutions. This role is critical to ensuring water department operations run smoothly, with a focus on both office-based tasks and field support.

Day-to-day work includes building and tracking assets in an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system using engineering drawings and intake forms, as well as verifying GIS data from source documents. The specialist will also prepare maps, develop ESRI ArcGIS Online/Portal applications like dashboards and story maps, and provide front-line support to field teams using mobile GIS applications.

As a member of a collaborative and productive team, this individual will identify and solve technical problems independently, devise new approaches to existing workflows, and brainstorm with colleagues to improve processes. The role requires excellent customer service skills and the ability to quickly adapt to change in a fast-paced municipal environment.

This is a variable hour benefit-eligible position with the opportunity to work up to 40 hours per week. Requirements

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Online/Portal applications, including web maps, web apps, dashboards, and story maps.
  • Ability to create and maintain assets in an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system.
  • Proficiency in cartographic principles and map preparation.
  • Experience providing training and technical assistance to users on GIS software and mobile applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to devise new approaches and alternative solutions to existing workflows.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment, multitask, and quickly adapt to change.
  • Excellent customer service skills with a demonstrated professional demeanor.
  • Experience with data processing and sharing for GIS applications such as system models and asset management.

Responsibilities

  • Creating new assets and tracking their associated attributes in an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system using engineering drawings, intake forms, and other supplemental data.
  • Overseeing and conducting research to find and verify GIS data from source documents to maintain water department GIS and asset data.
  • Supporting asset management activities and processing data for system models and master planning.
  • Providing training and technical assistance in the use of GIS data, software, and mobile applications to department staff.
  • Preparing maps for various department divisions using proper cartographic principles.
  • Utilizing ESRI ArcGIS Online/Portal applications such as web maps, web apps, dashboards, and story maps to meet department needs.
  • Identifying and solving technical problems independently and devising new approaches to existing workflows.
  • Exhibiting excellent customer service skills with a demonstrated professional demeanor when supporting users and external data requests.
