About this role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Structural Geologist at the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI). The role provides applied structural geology expertise, advice and support to GSNI and Energy Group in the Department for the Economy (DfE). This permanent position is based at Adelaide House, Belfast.
Duties include collation of existing and field-based capture and QA of a national-scale structural dataset for release through data portal. Contribute to review and update of GSNI’s geological mapping programme and publications. Undertake GIS capture and production of national-scale faults and dykes map and dataset.
Support Energy Geologists in geothermal projects and Minerals Geologists through structural assessment of mineral prospecting licences. Work with BGS colleagues on national mapping programme and UK structure initiatives. Collaborate with government, academia and industry to deliver strategic science.
Respond to external enquiries and consultations in GSNI’s statutory development management role. Present at conferences, workshops and fieldtrips, and publish through GSNI/BGS technical outputs and peer-reviewed journals. Pursue training, professional development and research grant bids to advance as a leading UK structural geologist.
Requirements
- Applied structural geology expertise
- Field-based structural data capture and QA experience
- Proficiency in GIS for geological dataset production
- Knowledge of faults, dykes and national-scale structural mapping
- Experience supporting geothermal and minerals projects structurally
- Ability to review and update geological mapping programmes
- Skills in collaborating on UK-wide geological initiatives
- Appropriate level of security screening/vetting
