About this role
AECOM is seeking a Principal GIS Specialist to serve as a hands-on technical lead responsible for architecting and delivering advanced GIS solutions. This role guides standards and automation while coordinating delivery across teams, with emphasis on technical depth and delivery excellence.
Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and implementing robust spatial data models, analytics pipelines, and application patterns using ArcGIS Enterprise and Online. The specialist drives automation with Python, ArcPy, and FME, and stewards enterprise geodatabases to ensure accuracy and scalability.
Working within a global team of over 50,000 professionals, the role collaborates with project managers and discipline leads to align GIS scope and deliverables. There is a strong preference for experience supporting UK-based environmental programs such as linear infrastructure, offshore wind, and carbon capture.
This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule combining office and remote work. The specialist will also serve as a technical point of contact for clients, shaping solutions and contributing to business growth within the Environment sector.
Requirements
- Expertise in ArcGIS Enterprise/Online, Experience Builder, Web Experience, dashboards, Survey123, and Field Maps.
- Strong proficiency in Python, ArcPy, FME, ModelBuilder, and Arcade for automation and workflow development.
- Experience with enterprise/file geodatabase design, schema management, versioning, and security.
- Ability to integrate GIS with CAD/BIM, SQL databases, APIs, and digital data capture tools.
- Demonstrated experience supporting UK-based environmental programs (e.g., linear infrastructure, offshore/onshore wind, solar, carbon capture & storage).
- Proven track record in technical leadership, client consulting, and shaping project solutions and cost estimates.
- Familiarity with multi‑criteria decision analysis and digital twin applications is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement robust spatial data models, analytics pipelines, and application patterns (ArcGIS Enterprise/Online, Experience Builder, dashboards, Survey123, Field Maps).
- Drive automation and quality using Python/ArcPy, FME, ModelBuilder, and reproducible workflows.
- Steward enterprise/file geodatabases including schema, standards, metadata, versioning, and security.
- Apply advanced analytics such as multi‑criteria decision analysis for site selection and support digital twin use cases.
- Integrate GIS with engineering and environmental workflows, CAD/BIM, databases (SQL), APIs, and digital data capture.
- Govern consistent workflows, documentation, metadata, and QA/QC, including adherence to Technical Quality Review processes.
- Serve as the technical point of contact on assigned projects, shaping solutions, scopes, and cost estimates for client pursuits.
- Support growth of long‑term client relationships, with emphasis on Environment sector needs.
